In recent years, there has been a surge in discussions surrounding #mentalhealth. However, despite the increasing awareness, the persistently high rates of reported cases beg the question: are we approaching this issue effectively? We have seen and heard of numerous organizations across the world raising awareness on the importance of supporting persons with mental health concerns, a conversation that saw the World Health Organization organize global campaigns for world mental health day every year since 2013.
Did you know that suicide is the second leading cause of death among 15-29-year-olds?… And 1 out of 4 persons who seek healthcare in Kenya have a mental health condition. according to the World Health Organization. Depression is common and there are increasing rates of substance and alcohol use disorders. The world marks the day for mental health every 10th October to raise awareness about mental health around the world and to mobilize efforts to support persons experiencing mental health issues, through the yearly campaigns by the World Health Organization.
All WHO Member States are expected to implement the “Comprehensive mental health action plan 2013–2030″, which aims to improve mental health by strengthening effective leadership and governance, providing comprehensive, integrated and responsive community-based care, implementing promotion and prevention strategies, and strengthening information systems and research.
In a revealing conversation with Dr. Franz Owano, a psychiatrist, an author and also a publisher, I uncovered some unconventional insights into mental health.
